Support youth connected with foster care as they enter the workforce, setting them on the path to success.
Career Fairs
NextStep hosts career fairs focused on connecting youth with future career opportunities and training. Volunteer to host a table and talk about your field of work, what skills or education are needed, and what a typical day looks like in your job. This helps young people discover real-life career possibilities in a relaxed, supportive environment.
Career Awareness & Exposure
Volunteers may invite youth to observe their workplace and answer questions about their education, career path, and advice for entering the field. This helps youth explore different professions in a low-pressure, supportive environment. This may include job shadowing and informational interviews.
Workplace Experience
Volunteers can offer structured internship opportunities, brief workplace observation days, or hands-on learning experiences where youth can practice real tasks under guidance. This gives students practical experience, builds confidence, and helps them understand workplace expectations.
Professional Skill Development
Volunteers may lead or assist with workshops on résumé writing, interviewing skills, communication, or workplace etiquette. They might review résumés one-on-one or present on what employers look for when hiring.
Career Pathway Preparation
Volunteers can help youth practice mock interviews, create LinkedIn or job profiles, or walk them through college, scholarship, or job applications. This stage is focused on helping youth take the next step toward employment or education with confidence and a plan.
