National Reunification Month: Supporting Stability, Strengthening Families
Following National Foster Care Month in May, it’s only fitting to recognize June as National Reunification Month. While foster care provides children with safety and stability during difficult times, reunification with their families is the ultimate goal whenever it can be achieved safely.
Reunification is a process, not a single moment. While DFPS caseworkers guide the process, Partnerships for Children supports parents and caregivers on their journey by helping remove barriers to success, allowing birth parents to focus on creating a safe, stable environment for their children.
Families working towards reunification are often balancing court requirements, transportation challenges, housing needs, childcare responsibilities, employment obligations, and the emotional stress that comes with navigating the child welfare system. Achieving reunification goals requires access to resources and a strong network of support.
Reunification is a community effort. Parents, relatives, foster caregivers, caseworkers, advocates, and community members all play a role in helping families succeed. Partnerships for Children, along with our partner organizations, provides immediate support during critical moments to help families build a foundation for lasting stability.
Meeting Basic Needs
Small acts of support can make a significant difference. Access to clothing, hygiene items, school supplies, and household essentials helps families create a safe and welcoming home. Whether it’s providing a bed for a child returning home, cleaning and hygiene supplies that help create clean environment, or transportation assistance for attending appointments and visits, these resources provided through the Rainbow Room can have a meaning impact on a family’s ability to reunite.
Reducing Financial Stress
Financial challenges can be a major obstacle for families working toward stability. The choice between purchasing diapers, cleaning supplies, hygiene items, and paying rent can have a significant impact on a family’s well-being. Assistance with rent and utility costs, provided through the Travis County Child Protective Services Board, can help relieve immediate financial pressures and allow families to focus on meeting their goals.
Building Community Support
Strong support systems help families navigate through the child welfare system. Our Foster Community program connects biological families, kinship caregivers, and foster families with resources to support them throughout the journey toward reunification. Support groups, parenting classes, babysitting services, mentorship, and other resources provide encouragement and practical assistance.
